Why writing gives me joy

This is a post close to my heart. Ever since I was a little girl, I loved writing. I would write about myself, the world and the people around me. My writing back then was child-like, of course, but it brought great joy to me and it was something that I enjoyed. Then I grew up and went through some tough times. Writing became an outlet for all the turbulent thoughts swirling within my head. I suppose I used my writing as a kind of coping mechanism. Now, I’ve grown up and life looks a lot better than before I have come to appreciate the place that writing has in my life and heart. So, I’ll start by saying that putting words onto a piece of paper paper or typing your thoughts onto a word programme gives me the best feeling ever! How can I describe this feeling? Well, it feels like a heavy weight has been lifted off your shoulders.  I’ve never been the one to express my feelings but writing gives me a space to do just that. I love travelling. I’ve travelled to several different countries

Fan fiction – to do or not to do

A vital part of my development of writer is to write about everything and anything. When I was younger, I was a big fan of fan fiction and I have contributed to the fandom myself. The ones that I was particularly interested in was “Harry Potter” and “Buffy the vampire slayer” as well as the marvel comics universe. I understand that it can be a fiery issues. There are some who believes that fan fiction is not truly a form of writing. Then, there are some who believes that fan fiction is a great way to sharpen your writing skills. A notable work that started off as fanfiction was the “fifty shades of grey” trilogy. It was originally a Twilight fan fic. I believe that fan fiction is a good way to practice your writing skills and gain readers. After all, you’ve got a readily available characters and an already established universe. However, its advantages can be a curse. Unless you want to write alternative universe fan fiction, I found that it can sometimes be too constricting. Readers so

Music and Writing does mix.

I love listening to music and I also love writing. So, it is only natural to try and do both.  I know many a writers who prefers their quiet space whilst writing but there are also people who love to listen to music and write. For me, I am in the middle. Although I love listening to music and also writing, it can sometimes prove a distraction. My mind wanders when I hear music and it can be hard to juggle both tasks at once. I adore different types of music. However, I find that not every music agrees with my writing. Hence, to compromise and to find a happy medium I try to listen to classical music whilst writing. The lack of lyrics makes it easier for me to concentrate on the writing tasks at hand. I also love listening to film scores whilst writing. In fact, I prefer film scores to classical music. They are more upbeat and I believe they kind of tell a story. Hans Zimmer film scores are great. So, what side of the fence do you stand on? Do you think writin

Third Draft Blues

As you guys will probably know, I am still in the process of writing “the angels of fire” trilogy. For the first novel “The Damnation Plays” I am currently on my third draft. This means that I’ve written two other earlier versions and have slowly streamlined and honed my writing and ideas to make it into a publishable novel. However, I am aware that it won’t all be ready even then because I still need to send it to my trustworthy and friendly beta reader. I’ve written novels before but I’ve never published them. They’re somewhere hiding away in my proverbial attic waiting to see the light of the day.  However, this is different. I am planning to publish the “Angels of fire trilogy”. This brings another different set of pressures upon me as an author because I want to give my readers the best possible experience reading my novel. I’ve also discovered the flaws of my novel whilst writing the third draft. For example, I’ve got a minor character getting hurt in a pivotal scene but in the s

Wattpad and Writing

Hi guys, I have finally jumped on the bandwagon that is Wattpad and decided to post a story onit. Whilst, I've decided not to post the angels of fire Trilogy on Wattpad, there's a similar story (think of it as a spinoff set in a similar universe but with its own distinctive taste) called Finding Anita. Feel free to click on the link below: http://www.wattpad.com/100821145-finding-anita-blood-on-your-hands?utm_source=web&utm_medium=link&utm_content=share_reading&ref_id=2977843 What happens when you let a half demon child loose? Especially one that is hormonal and see everyone and everything as a threat. Mon is no angel and his wife Penelope is anything but. However, when their daughter Anita suddenly disappears one day under mysterious circumstances each have to find their own way to bring her back. Mon literally makes a deal with the devil and Penelope enlists the help of former flame turned detective Ruben Bax. Problem is Ruben doesn't want anything to do with

pro·cras·ti·nat...

pro·cras·ti·nate (pr-krst-nt, pr-) v. pro·cras·ti·nat·ed, pro·cras·ti·nat·ing, pro·cras·ti·nates v.intr. To put off doing something, especially out of habitual carelessness or laziness. v.tr. To postpone or delay needlessly. (The free dictionary) I think everyone has experienced putting off something indefinitely at least once. Sometimes you get ideas buzzing in your head but haven’t got the time, willpower or energy to do something about it. I’ve been experiencing this dreaded thing called procrastination for the last few weeks. Putting words down in my novel has been a chore. It seems strange that an idea which I couldn’t wait to write down in the beginning has become so tiresome. I wondered where all the excitement and hope as I embarked on this project has gone.  However, there is a light at the end of the tunnel. Like all things in life the feeling will pass and then you look down at your manuscript with renewed sense of vigour to finish it once and for all.  It’s only then that

Awesome Creative Book Cover Tutorial part 1

My friends and acquintances have often asked me how I design book covers. In all honesty, I don't know myself. Just like my writing, I come up with ideas on the spot. With this tutorial I try to structure the process down. So here it goes: I often use GIMP for the time being since I can't afford photoshop right now. I've used photoshop in the past and have found it very user friendly compared to GIMP. However, at its price point GIMP is a great program to use. 1. I took a picture of myself on my mobile phone which I then uploaded onto my computer. I also had a picture of a golden drape which I've liked so much that I decided to incorporate it into my image   So I open gimp. I go to File >Open, to open up two screens of the images.   Now With the drape image I select the rectangle select tool which can be found on the toolbox on the left and select the desired area which I want to cut. Then I right click> edit> copy. I paste it on top of the second image. I resi

The proper care and feeding of ideas

A light bulb moment occurs   I believe in the importance of ideas. In fact, I almost worship ideas because that's what keeps me going when I find that the first draft of my novel is going nowhere or I am at the brink of giving up. Sometimes I get ideas at the spur of the moment and sometimes it germinates in my head, sometimes for years, until it finally blooms into a finished product. For instance, in one novel that I am working on I had the idea for it since 2006. It morphed into different forms until I had the "aha" moment and decided that this was the shape it was going to take. Ideas are really important for writers for obvious reasons. Without a good idea many of the greatest novels wouldn't have been written. I have a bad memory so I find it really helpful to jot down my ideas into a notepad or into my mobile phone since ideas often come to me in random moments. To end this post, I would like to ask my readers a question. How are you feeding and caring for your
